In a online social world, we are getting more inter-connected and community-driven — that is, not just the author is the one being the driving force, readers and the community are part of it too. With this concept in mind, Tumblr has launched a feature called Submissions which let readers submit posts via web or email and contribute to your blog. We hope this will take off as a communal sharing system.

Photos are what defines the web as a whole — no chunky amount of texts, just pics and they can tell a lot more than words can say. That’s why Tumblr is introducing a new feature called Photosets which enables you to upload a collection of photos and post it as a Tumblr post. Now Tumblr just got a lot more photo-friendly as a place for sharing photos.

It has been a while since StumpleUpon launched Su.pr, a URL shortening servuce which was its latest initiative ti join in the URL shortening trend. It was in beta and only selected users has the chance to use it. Now it has recently released it to all all StumpleUpon users and some of the many features include:

• Simultaneous posting to Twitter and FaceBook.
• Ability to schedule your posts (we even recommend optimal times based on your previous posting activity).

It now no longer called Gmail Beta — Gmail will now sufice — as Google officially takes off the Beta label from Gmail which was in beta for 5 years. Not any great update, but the beta culture had been all with rage with most of the Google products and have formed an internet convention on its own. Think and beta and you think of Google. And interestingly, Google also launched a function called “Back To Beta” which puts back the beta sticker to your Gmail so it has “never” left beta.

There has been no news of the iPhone Reddit news, iReddit for a long time, but they have just update it with a new version that fixed bugs and changed quite a few stuffs. It’s up for grabs for $0.99 for the time being here. And on a side note — the ad-supported iReddit Free is coming on its way, so keep your eyes peeled on that/

The problem of similar stories floating on Digg has been around for quite some time and it poses problems on the Digg ecosystem as Digg is unable to differentiate these similar stories. But now it might just have the solution for it. Digg has now released some major updates to its dupe detection technology to eliminate duplicate submissions. Here’s how it works:

To better understand the nature of the problem, we analyzed the types of duplicate stories being submitted. Most common are the same stories from the same site, but with different URLs. Our R&D team came up with a solution that identifies these types of duplicates by using a document similarity algorithm. Look for a separate tech blog post on how this works, but it has proven to be a reliable way of identifying identical content from the same source.

You might not have noticed this but YouTube has recently doubled the video pload size for all users from 1 GB to 2 GB. What does this mean then? It means you can now upload longer videos at a higher resolution as well as large HD files directly from your camera. Not a major feature for users. But if you are a YouTube power user, you might like it a lot.

In case, you did not know, Michael Jackson, the “King Of Pop” just passed away yesterday and we are really sad on the loss of such a great pop-star. Many users on the web must have felt the same too, as Google searches about Michael Jackson exploded on Google yesterday. Here is a chart showing the search trend yesterday and here is Google explaining the trend:

Search volume began to increase around 2:00pm, skyrocketed by 3:00pm, and stabilized by about 8:00pm. As you can see in Google Hot Trends, many of the fastest rising search queries from yesterday and today have been about Michael Jackson’s passing (others pertained to the death of another cultural icon, Farrah Fawcett). People who weren’t near a computer yesterday turned to their mobile phones to check on breaking news. We saw one of the largest mobile search spikes we’ve ever seen, with 5 of the top 20 searches about the Moonwalker. The spike in searches related to Michael Jackson was so big that Google News initially mistook it for an automated attack. As a result, for about 25 minutes yesterday, when some people searched Google News they saw a “We’re sorry” page before finding the articles they were looking for.

Tumlr is now testing a new feature called Endless Dashboard scrolling which you can enable on your preference page. However, it is claimed that it is not supported in Internet Explorer but Internet Explorer users are the vast majority and there would be less people using it. What’s your take on this?
